“Nourish to Flourish” – A Community-Driven Approach to Nutrition and Health

The ULI Nutrition and Health Program is rooted in the belief that no child or community should suffer due to preventable malnutrition and poor health. We focus on improving dietary practices, promoting healthy local food production, and educating families on nutrition and hygiene. By integrating agriculture, health education, and local food systems, we aim to foster long-term wellness and resilience in vulnerable communities.

🎯 Key Objectives

  • Combat malnutrition, especially among children under 12, pregnant women, and the elderly

  • Increase access to nutritious, locally produced food

  • Provide nutrition education and training to caregivers and community members

  • Reduce preventable diseases linked to poor diet and hygiene

  • Promote sustainable dietary habits rooted in local resources

🛠️ Program Components

1. Community-Based Nutrition Outreach

  • Nutrition assessments in rural schools and households

  • Distribution of Nutri-Tamba and other balanced food supplements

  • Monitoring of child growth and wellness with local health workers

  • Targeted support for malnourished and at-risk children


2. School Feeding and Food Support

  • Provision of nutritious meals or snacks in partner schools

  • Incorporation of locally sourced ingredients like millet, soybeans, and vegetables

  • Use of school farms and gardens to produce part of the food


3. Nutrition Education & Cooking Demonstrations

  • Community training sessions on balanced diets, child feeding, and hygienic food handling

  • Demonstrations on how to prepare Nutri-Tamba, sweet potato-based products, and moringa-enhanced meals

  • Education materials for schools and homes


4. Home & Community Gardens

  • Support for families to grow nutrient-rich crops: tomatoes, okra, moringa, amaranth, pumpkin

  • Trainings on small-scale, climate-smart gardening techniques

  • Encouragement of organic and indigenous farming for better health


5. Health & Hygiene Promotion

  • Workshops on safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices

  • Distribution of basic hygiene kits where needed

  • Partnership with local health centers for immunization drives and health checkups


6. Women and Caregiver Empowerment

  • Special training for mothers and caregivers on maternal nutrition and child care

  • Promotion of exclusive breastfeeding and nutritious weaning foods

  • Integration with agricultural entrepreneurship programs to help women produce and sell healthy food products

  • Collaborate with local health clinics, schools, and agriculture agencies

  • Promote local production and ownership of nutrition strategies
