From Forgotten Fields to Flourishing Futures

The Heart Behind Uli Empowerment Initiative
“When Mama Ruth first held a handful of ginger rhizomes in her calloused palms, she had no idea her family’s story was about to change.”
That’s how one of our most inspiring journeys began—in a modest village nestled among the hills of Southern Kaduna. A widowed mother of four, Mama Ruth had never cultivated ginger before. Her life had been a daily struggle—working odd jobs, skipping meals, and watching her children grow up too quickly under the weight of hardship.
But she held onto hope—hope that her children would eat well, go to school, and one day, dream beyond just survival.
This is where the Uli Empowerment Initiative found her. And where we, as a community-led NGO, discovered our “why.”
Why We Exist
Across rural Nigeria, communities like Mama Ruth’s brim with strength, wisdom, and resilience—but they often lack access to opportunity, tools, and information. That’s where we step in.
At Uli Empowerment Initiative, we believe real change begins not with aid, but with empowerment. Our mission is to transform lives by providing practical training in agriculture, supporting nutrition and education, and equipping vulnerable families—especially women and children—to lead sustainable, dignified lives.
We don’t just give charity.
We build capacity.
We restore dignity.
We empower changemakers.
What We Do
From ginger farming to sweet potato processing, from Nutri-Tamba nutrition education to academic scholarships, our programs are grounded in local realities. We partner with schools, health centers, and agricultural experts to ensure that our work is collaborative, inclusive, and sustainable.
Our Agricultural Entrepreneurship Program trains women and youth in the cultivation and marketing of crops like ginger, turmeric, sweet potato, and moringa. We teach them not only how to farm, but how to turn their harvests into high-demand, value-added products.
Meanwhile, our Nutrition and Health Program tackles malnutrition with practical training on food preparation, the use of local ingredients, and the promotion of healthy family diets.
And through Partnerships and Sustainability, we ensure every community develops long-term capacity to carry the vision forward.
Mama Ruth Today
Today, Mama Ruth tends her small but thriving ginger farm just behind her home. With our training and a little startup support, she now sells ginger to local processors and earns enough income to feed her family and send her eldest daughter to school. She’s even teaching other women in her village how to do the same.
What began as a few ginger roots has become the seed of change—not just for one family, but for an entire community.
